Oil & Gas Industry Leader Chooses RGB for 24/7 Flexibility

Statoil Mariner Chooses RGB for 24/7 Control Room Flexibility

Statoil is the largest operator of oil and gas fields on the Norwegian continental shelf. Operating more than 50 fields on the shelf is no small feat; 24/7 reliability, safety, and stability are of critical concern. In the control rooms, prompt action in the first minutes of an emergency can save lives and protect the environment. Response time is critical.

Each platform maintains a control room. But with so many, the rooms vary greatly and much of the equipment is vintage. Operators must be trained on different user interfaces and control methods. This has an impact on performance, training time, skill level, and most importantly, the ability to respond quickly to an emergency.

For nearly a decade, Statoil has been working with Global Control Center Design (GCCD), a Norwegian control room specialist in Drammen, to upgrade these control rooms. Due to the inaccessibility of offshore platforms, Statoil’s most important criterion is 24/7 reliability with minimal need for service and support. GCCD relies on RGB Spectrum’s video processing to satisfy their client’s stringent requirements.

“I am very happy with RGB Spectrum’s MediaWall Video Wall Processors,” said Børre Mortensen, Managing Director of GCCD. “The first rooms were installed more than eight years ago, and have been running faultlessly since installation. We find that RGB products consistently meet our high performance expectations.”

RGB Spectrum’s MediaWall 4200 and 4500 video wall processors are featured in the control rooms at Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen, Mariner, Åsgard B, Gudrun, and Valemon facilities. GCCD is currently upgrading other installations with RGB Spectrum’s newest processor, the MediaWall V, with 4K input and display capabilities. The rooms have varying configurations of four to eight projectors controlled by a Crestron panel supporting a variety of inputs including PCs and videoconferencing systems. Consistent user interfaces and system reliability produce faster operator response times without interruptions caused by maintenance issues.

RGB Spectrum’s MediaWallfamily of video wall processors provide a powerful solution that is ideal for applications involving multi-screen video walls. Designed around an embedded processing platform that is optimized for high-resolution video and graphics, MediaWallprocessors consistently deliver flexibility, enhanced security, real-time signal throughput with no dropped frames, and 24/7 reliability in the most demanding environments.
